Backed bows are stated by Mr. Roberts, in the English Bowman, to have been first
made in England by the Kelsals of Manchester at the end of the sixteenth century:
there is no mention of them in Toxophilus, but in a will of 1569 a 'peaced bow' is
bequeathed.
